The Currier Museum of Art is the only museum in the world to own and offer tours of two homes designed by the preeminent American architect Frank Lloyd Wright. As these homes are two of only five houses designed by Wright in New England, and the only two in the state of New Hampshire, the Currier is the premiere destination for Wright’s architecture in the region. Designed for the Zimmerman and the Kalil families, these houses are exemplary of Wright’s later Usonian architecture and showcase the meticulous control he had over every aspect of the design from the structure of the houses to the furnishings and fixtures inside of them. The pristine condition of these homes, with their original Wright-designed furnishings intact, allows visitors a rare glimpse into Wright’s work and into the life of the couples who lived there.
However, to complete any project, an architect must collaborate with their clients and their colleagues. The Currier Museum is lucky to also steward many archival documents that tell the story of the families and how their houses were built, with two visionary women leading the charge. Through letters, photographs, and Frank Lloyd Wright's architectural drawings, this exhibition tells the story of how the Zimmermans and the Kalils worked with Wright and his assistants to have two masterpieces of modern architecture built in Manchester.
I curated this exhibition as a part of my role as the Curatorial Project Manager at the Currier.
On view at the Currier Museum of Art from June 11,2025 to June 7, 2026.
